fanfiction: the sacrifice

blanket-fictions:

title: the sacrifice
pairing: sasusaku
summary: In order to appease the village protector—the Patroness of Terrible Life Choices—every year, a virgin was selected from among the most prominent families, and sacrificed to her sexual appetite.
warning: CRACK AU. I’m sorry. This came out of a conversation with lilmikomiko who eats crushed dreams and sugared souls for breakfast.

The pyre had been burning for three days and two nights, carefully nurtured by the patroness’ attendants.

“Prepare the patroness for penetration,” the chief priestess cried.

Tonight, it would begin.

The Ravishing, as the festival had come to be known, was an annual celebration which would, according to local lore, ensure the continued prosperity of the village. In order to appease the village patron—the Patroness of Terrible Life Choices—every year, a virgin was selected from among the most prominent families, and sacrificed to her sexual appetite.

For seven days, and seven nights, the sacrifice would have to please her, ceaselessly, carnally. Afterward, he would, in order to preserve the integrity of what the patroness had first touched, be inducted into a religious order to live in seclusion for the rest of his life.

It was, the village elders said, an honor to be chosen for this monumental task.

This year, the lot had fallen on a particularly worthy candidate, and it was nearly time for him to be paraded through the village center.

“Make way for The Virgin!”

Four slickly-oiled youths carrying palm leaves led the procession, followed by the fire-breathers—a nod to the Virgin’s elemental affinity—and finally, a gold and red velvet litter, upon which sat the sacrifice.

(At the sight of him, several women had the vapors and had to be carried away, so as not to block The Virgin’s path.)

“There he is!”

Uchiha Sasuke had long been accustomed to the trail of whispers he left in his wake. With his dark eyes, pearlescent skin, aristocratic features and that crown of riotous hair, no one in the village could believe that the devastatingly handsome second son of the famed Uchiha clan had managed to remain chaste.

To the surprise of all, he had been tested, and he had passed muster.

The procession continued, passing the village market, the town hall, and finally ending in front of the hospital. Without a word, Sasuke rose from his position on the litter, and stepped lightly onto firm ground, where he was greeted by the elders.

“Young Sasuke,” Homura said, forcibly shaking the hand Sasuke had reluctantly offered, “are you ready to become a man this eve?”

“Anything for the good of this village,” he intoned.

“That’s precisely what we like to hear. Would that all the village youths could be as amenable to that which is, for some of them, inevitable.”

After a few more words with his handlers, Sasuke made his way toward the Uchiha compound, never noticing the pair of leaf-green eyes that followed his progress.

Upon entering his chambers, he knew in an instant that he was not alone. Never one to fear an opponent—and certainly one not in his own home—Sasuke called out to his unknown assailant.

“You heathen fool—how dare you desecrate sacred ground!”

The soft voice that answered his anger was the very last he had expected to hear.

“Forgive me, Sasuke-sama, but while I accept the slight against my devotion to our protector, I do disdain the epithet ‘fool’.”

Haruno Sakura stepped out of the shadow, baring herself to his perusal.

“Unless,” she continued softly, “you mean that as an insult to one who has loved you for as long as the moon has dictated the rise and fall of the sea tides. If so,” she said, lowering her gaze to the ground, “then this ‘fool’ will happily claim her title.”

"Sakura,” he murmured. And then, in a louder voice:

“What are you doing here? Being alone with The Virgin is forbidden, you know that!”

The gaze she turned on him was plaintive, but determined.

“I’m here to ask you to reconsider, Sasuke-kun. There’s still time—if we leave now, we can make it to the borders before we are discovered missing!”

She took a bold step forward and wrapped one arm around his waist to draw him closer, while dragging her free hand through his thick hair. For a moment, Sasuke enjoyed the gentle caress, before he remembered his place—his role.

“Sakura, please—we mustn’t! What of my honor?”

Sakura sighed, but did not release him. This was an old argument.

“Sasuke…”

Sasuke scowled at her untoward hesitation.

“Unhand The Virgin,” he said, with his most imperious tone of voice.

Sakura, who was used to his dramatics, was decidedly unimpressed.

“Don’t you see? We can be together, Sasuke-kun, like we talked about before. We can get away from this village, its archaic practices, and superstitious bylaws—we can finally be free!”

Leave? I cannot simply leave. I have a duty to our people—to my clan!”

Sakura looked at him, her bright eyes fierce in the dying light of day.

"Hang the people! Hang your clan!Think of yourself, Sasuke. Think of your own happiness! Think of all the things your damnably excessive devotion to duty has stopped you from doing, all the experiences you’ve stopped yourself from having! Please…even if it’s not with me, run away from here. Please listen to the voice of someone who has loved you, like one who has loved a far-off star. Please allow yourself to want something more—please allow yourself to be happy, Sasuke!”

He stiffened in her hold. With a sinking heart, burdened by the reality of his response, Sakura watched as her beloved’s nostrils flared, and he stepped away from her embrace.

"Get away from me, you foul temptress! Have you enjoyed living in a fantasy where you and I could be one? To ask me to put personal happiness over duty—I should have known. What would a street-urchin-turned-mercenary know about honor?”

Almost as soon as the words left his mouth, he regretted them.

"Sakura, I—”

She flinched as though he had struck her, and backed away when he reached out to touch her face.

“Forgive me for overstepping my boundaries, Uchiha-sama. I will leave you to your rest now.”

She left quickly, unable to stifle her muffled crying, and ignored his pleas for her to stay.

After a moment’s reflection, Sasuke pushed the sound of her pained sobs away, and hardened his resolve.

It was better this way.

The time had come.

Sasuke had been primped, plucked, and oiled to within an inch of his life. His skin shone slickly under the flickering lights of the torches in his chambers.

His attendant, cloaked in white robes, stood like a sentinel near his door.

“The hour grows near,” he said into the silence. “We must go.”

Before he could rise from his seat to put on his hooded cloak, there was a knock at the door.

“Enter,” he intoned, hoping that Sakura had given up on her foolish quest.

To his surprise, it was Itachi who had come to call at this late hour.

“May I have a moment alone with my brother, before he is to be consecrated?”

The guard was unsure.

“This is highly unusual, Uchiha-sama, I—”

“Grant this request, to one who will never see his beloved brother after this night.”

At Sasuke’s nod, the guard could do nothing but obey.

“I will wait for you downstairs, Sasuke-sama, but please, be mindful of the time.”

Itachi’s eyes did not waver.

“Forgive me little brother, we don’t have a lot of time. Suffice to say, I overheard your conversation earlier this evening, and—”

He stopped, gathered himself, and continued.

“I cannot allow you to make this mistake, so I have decided that I will not.”

Itachi looked at him then, and the particular gleam in his eye reminded Sasuke of a time, long ago, when his brother had taken the blame for a shattered figurine in their father’s study.

A figurine that Sasuke had broken.

In that instant, Sasuke knew.

“Itachi, no, you can’t! I won’t let you!”

Itachi, grim-faced, shook his head.

“Are you so foolish, or so fortunate, little brother, that you have the luxury of turning away a chance for true happiness? Not one begotten of honor, or pride, but borne of love? The girl has offered you her head and her heart—or are you too blinded by your slavish devotion to an outdated society to accept the chance she has given you? I, too, am purer than untrodden snow. Allow me the opportunity to be…of use to the unkempt protector in your place.”

Sasuke was aghast.

"But what of Father and Mother? What of the clan? Who will lead them if I leave and you are, for all intents and purposes, exiled?”

Itachi only smiled.

“There are many candidates who are more than capable of leading the Uchiha when the time comes. And, worry not over our parents—in a few seasons, Father will understand; I suspect Mother already does. Now, we are losing time, and you must leave.”

Itachi pulled him in then, for one last hug.

“Remember what I am giving up to keep you safe, brother, and do me the honor of living well.”

With that, he gestured to Sakura, who had been waiting in the wings. Her eyes glittered with unshed tears for the sacrifice Itachi had made.

“Fly! Before the mob realizes the truth of the exchange!”

Sasuke turned to his brother, overcome.

“We’ll visit you! I’ll find a way!”

“I do not doubt it, Sasuke. Now go, or it will all be for nothing!”

Sasuke looked as though he was about to protest again, so Sakura, who was as strong as ten oxen, slung him over her shoulder and carried him out of the room, through a window, and onto the sturdy branches of an old oak tree.

“Thank you, Itachi-san,” she said, her voice breaking, as she looked back at the man who was in the process of donning his stolen ceremonial robes. “Thank you for everything.”

And then, they were gone.
